PeepCode: Capistrano Concepts and a Free Rails + Ubuntu Screencast 6 comments

posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by topfunky

Capistrano Concepts is the newest PeepCode (released earlier this week). People are already saying that “it put a lot of things into perspective and really helped [me] grasp the concepts. I think I’ve learned Rails faster from your screencasts than all the books I have combined.” (Jon Baer, Developer)

Also available as a free bonus is a 10 minute screencast showing you how to install a full Rails stack on Ubuntu using the deprec gem. It’s a great way to build a staging server or a sandbox for experimentation. Download it at the new site.

The new site also has some new features that people have been asking for:

  • The option to sign up and keep a record of the screencasts you purchase from now on
  • Subscribe for a discount
  • All screencasts are now available in a format compatible with the video iPod
  • Now running on Mongrel and speedy new RailsMachine hardware
  • Other features coming soon…

Thats awesome, I had no idea about deprec.

    Thanks Geoff

  • This peepcode was awesome(as are the other ones)!

I was ready to start learning about using Capistrano becuase manual deployments/upgrades are a pain.

Thanks so much for putting the time and energy into these screencasts.

Awesome – can’t wait to see this one. Also a big plus for the video ipod format.

  • Great video Geoff… you’ve really mastered the whole informative-video-podcast thang!

You might have covered this in the screencast but I struggled for about 15 minutes on why irb would not install. I failed to enable the “universe” repository in my apt-get sources config found at

    /etc/apt/sources.list
    .

I had to uncomment the sources listed under the header that looked something like:
    ## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe'

@Brian: I didn’t have to do that with Ubuntu 6.06. Are you using a newer version?

A useful tip at any rate. I’ll add that to the screencast.
